Gord Magee, the sales manager at Chatham, Ontario based Takumi Manufacturing, spends a lot of time during his day sourcing out sales opportunities for his firm, which specializes in precision production machining for use in heavy military trucks and other areas.

And one of the most effective tools in his sales arsenal is the OMX toolkit.

We’ve got a lot of custom equipment here and my job is to make sure that the machinery is always running,” McGee said during a recent interview.

Takumi machinery includes four Mitsubishi vertical machining centers (40” x 20” x 24”), two Toyoda FH450s horizontal machining centers, two Feeler HV 1000 vertical machining centers, plus a Matsuura MAM-700HG horizontal machining center, a  Feeler HT30SY twin spindle lathe and a Mori Seiki HS500 horizontal machining center.

The machinery is supported by a variety of other Takumi capabilities including research and development testing, 3D design utilizing a Solidworks Ziess computer numerical control (CNC), co-ordinate measuring machine CMM and Calypso software (X1000mm x Y1200mm x Z580mm) plus a variety of statistical process control (SPC) and statistical quality control (SQC) mechanisms.

We use the OMX database as a sales tool to source out the capabilities and requirements of other OMX clients and subcontractors,” said Magee. The OMX database currently includes 47,000 profiles listing capabilities, skillsets and ongoing requirements from manufacturing firms across Canada.

Contacts developed through OMX have already ended up in Takumi proposals, including Wärtsilä Canada and others, according to Magee. “I was surprised the first time I received a response from an OMX sourced firm, but it seems to be standard practice,” he said.

Takumi works primarily in grey and ductile iron, cast aluminum, forged steel, stainless steel and titanium to can make anywhere from 50 – 5000 parts per month. The company is controlled good compliant, looking to move into aerospace parts and recently quoted on a contract to manufacture Airbus A380 components.
